What is a headache?
As many as 90% of people have at least one headache per year. Headaches are often just minor head pain: however, 40% of people experience severe disabling pain annually.
Migraine
Migraine is a common type of headache that affects approximately 15% of women and 6% of men.
Characteristics:
- Chronic and reoccurring; this means that migraines keep coming back although there are pain free intervals between headaches
- May be activated or “triggered” by certain things such as menstruation and food
- More than just a headache…also include nausea, vomiting and various other nerve-related problems such as sensitivity to light and sound
- Up to a third suffer from aura, which involves disturbed vision (seeing flashing lights or zigzag patterns) or numbness and tingling
